Sephora is a French multinational beauty retailer founded in 1969 in Limoges, France. The company was launched in Paris in August 1970 and is named after the biblical figure Zipporah (French: Séphora), the wife of Moses. In 1993, Dominique Mandonnaud acquired Sephora and merged it with his own perfume chain called Shop 8, which he had started in 1979. Mandonnaud is credited with revolutionizing the beauty retail industry by creating the "assisted self-service" concept, which allowed customers to freely touch, smell, and sample products before purchasing—a stark departure from the traditional behind-the-counter model where cosmetics were kept out of customers' reach.
